I am a ceramic artist and educator living and working in Chicago, Illinois. I am currently a resident artist at Terra Incognito Studio and Gallery and work for Urban Gateways teaching art lessons in and around the city.

I have always been interested in comparisons. When a shape, color, or smell catches my attention, I file it away in my memory to be recalled at a later moment. This sensory recollection only happens when the memory finds a partner; another something that evokes the same feeling. My work begins with the process of documenting these observations.

A rusty blue garbage truck, a bolt studded viaduct in peeling green, or a leaning construction horse striped black and yellow remind me of worn toys and discarded play scenarios from the past. It is through these comparisons of color, shape, and order that I begin to understand myself. Mining imagery of childhood and other remnants of my history as inspiration, I strive to connect attributes of my childhood identity with those I’ve come to know as an adult.

I imagine my viewer sensing a kinship with each piece as when listening to a love song. Like an old familiar song, recognition shifts over time, and understanding becomes particular to a specific moment in a person’s life. Through my work, I intend the figure to serve as a stand in for self. I create the work as an interpretation of my own experience with the hope that some detail; a crack, a gesture, a color, resonates within the viewer and remains meaningful over time.
